We bring remediation services to our students, right where they are.
Upon entering the third grade we decided our son would be in need of reading services. While he had a good vocabulary and strong oral comprehension skills, decoding words was laborious and frustrating to him. We had spoken with the local Lindamood-Bell Center to learn more about their style of tutoring and also investigated several other programs. The Lindamood-Bell style of tutoring had been recommended to us by our son's school. We liked the focus of LMB on imaging and really liked the fact that Reading Boosters would be able to offer the Lindamood-Bell style while adapting it to our son's needs and schedule. We chose a 2 times per week schedule with the intention of maintaining it for one year. While many children may benefit from the more intense program of 4+ hours per day, we wanted to see the effects of the tutoring over a longer period of time and how it would generalize in all of his reading materials.
We have now been with Reading Boosters for several years. The first year was hard work for our son as the strong foundation of skills were being developed and we definitely saw solid improvement in his decoding and word attack skills. We wanted to continue the program while utilizing some other types of materials. [He] developed a close relationship with Sheila Durden, the tutor and owner of Reading Boosters, and this helped make an "unlikeable" subject more enjoyable. Each year we made adaptations to his program which included LMB along with more personalized approaches and saw our son blossom in his overall reading/language arts skills.
Each year our son's school would do an end of the year test for his overall reading/writing/language arts skills and this past year (6th grade) showed he had grown 9 grade levels since the beginning of third grade. While we could have stopped the program much sooner and been happy with the results it worked for our son and his schedule to continue to utilize Reading Boosters for his Reading/Language Arts program. I think the LMB style with its focus on imaging is a great style. Sheila is a professional and warm patient tutor that made the tasks of the program personal and encouraged our son to keep at it in the face of great frustration. I have the highest praise for Sheila and the way she weaves the integrity of the LMB program with more personal strategies just for your child. This is what makes the difference.
