Our son is diagnosed with PDD, mild autism, ADD, and CP and is highly functional. He has a hard time with motor planning, reading, writing, and math. His comprehension is good. We researched and tried many programs for reading and math. The Lindamood Bell program was one that we never tried due to the limited options to receive the training. After a friend recommended Sheila Durden/Reading Boosters, we decided to try her and the Lindamood Bell program for a summer session. The results were noticeable to us. Sheila has an incredible ability to connect with kids of all ages and abilities. We decided to ask Sheila to develop a full time home school program for our son for the following school year with the focus on reading and math.
The school year was fantastic. Sheila was very engaging with our son and developed a program that focused on reading and math. She was also able to weave in history and science into the program. Her interaction with our son is great…he was motivated to work, learn, be creative, write, and gain confidence. His improvement in reading and math is very noticeable. She also incorporated technology into his program, leveraged computer programs, iPad books, created a web site for son, tapped into son’s creative strengths, encouraged him to write many “books”, fostered creativity, and made learning fun.
Sheila came to our home every day to execute the program and she was very punctual and consistent. She has a great relationship with our son and we often heard them working, laughing, and enjoying the time together. Sheila used a reinforcement approach that allowed him to “succeed in chunks” and provided structured time/scheduled breaks that are very effective. It was a great experience for our son. We have recently put him back into school for social reasons and still have Sheila working with him four hours per week to continue to build on what they started. Sheila is a very effective “connector” for kids and very professional in her approach.
